How an F Connector Works

01

Center conductor must be solid, not stranded

F connectors are sized for a solid 18 AWG (RG6) / 14 AWG (RG11) pin. Stranded-center cable cannot form a reliable contact and should not be used with standard F terminations.

02

Impedance is set by the cable + termination together

A 75 Ω system needs 75 Ω cable and a connector that preserves that impedance through the mating interface. Any discontinuity (over-stripped braid, bent pin, cross-threaded nut) creates a reflection.

03

Shield type changes the body

Tri-shield and quad-shield RG6 have a larger effective diameter; the connector ferrule/compression ring must seat against that shield, or the seal and retention both fail.

Key Points for Purchasing F Connectors

Cable Fit:A correct fit between connector and cable is fundamental. The connector should properly accommodate outer jacket diameter, shielding layer, dielectric, center conductor, and cable geometry. An incorrectly matched connector may be difficult to install or may not provide sufficient mechanical retention.

Electrical Performance:For RF and CATV applications, check frequency range, characteristic impedance, contact resistance, insulation resistance, working voltage, withstand voltage, and return loss/VSWR where applicable.

Indoor vs. Outdoor F Connector Selection

Indoor Applications

For TV, CATV, broadband, and equipment connections, priorities focus on cable compatibility, installation speed, electrical performance, cost per connection, and connector availability.

Outdoor Applications

Additional attention to environmental exposure is required. Evaluate moisture resistance, water ingress protection, corrosion resistance, UV exposure, temperature range, cable jacket compatibility, and additional waterproofing requirements.

Quality Control for Consistent Bulk Orders

Our quality-control approach focuses on:

Incoming Material Inspection:The IPQC process checks purchased raw materials before they enter production.

Dimensional Control:Connector dimensions and cable-fitting areas should remain within the specified tolerances to ensure consistent assembly.

Contact Performance:Applicable contact and electrical characteristics can be checked according to the product specification.

Assembly Verification:The connector should be evaluated together with the intended coaxial cable to confirm proper termination and mechanical retention.

FAQ

Q: What is an F Connector used for?

A:An F Connector is a threaded coaxial connector used to terminate and connect compatible coaxial cables to equipment such as TVs, cable equipment, antennas, splitters, amplifiers and broadband devices.

Q: What is the difference between compression, crimp and twist-on F Connectors?

A:Compression connectors use a dedicated compression tool and are commonly selected for professional, high-volume installation.
Crimp connectors use a crimp tool to mechanically secure the connector to the cable.
Twist-on connectors can be installed by threading the connector onto a compatible prepared cable and are useful where simple and fast installation is required.

Q: How do I choose the correct F Connector?

A:Provide the cable model, cable diameter, shielding structure and application first. For large projects, a cable sample or technical drawing is preferable because different coaxial cables may require different connector dimensions.

Q: Are F Connectors 50Ω or 75Ω?

A:The impedance depends on the application and specific product. The referenced RG6 compression connector is specified as 75 Ω nominal, which is typical for many CATV/video applications.

Q: Can F Connectors be used outdoors?

A:Yes, provided the selected connector and termination method are suitable for the environmental conditions.

Q: Do I need a special tool?

A:It depends on the connector type.Twist-on connectors are designed for simpler installation, while compression and crimp connectors require the corresponding installation tools.

Q: Can you customize F Connectors?

A:Yes. Customization can be discussed for connector structure, cable compatibility, materials, plating, dimensions, sealing, marking and packaging.

Q: Can I order samples before a bulk order?

A:Yes. Sample evaluation is recommended for new cable/connector combinations, particularly when the connector will be used in a large-scale installation.
